Þrjú framúrskarandi vín.

Calera Pinot Noir 2015, Central Coast, Kalifornía, U.S.A.

Það er sjaldan sem ég smakka vín og ég segi „holy shit“ eftir fyrsta sopann og þá meina ég í góðri merkingu. Ég var svolítið varkár þegar ég opnaði flöskuna, „myndi þetta vera of gamalt vín, hvernig eldist Central Coast Pinot?“. Það var skemmst frá því að segja að ég þurfti ekki að hafa neinar áhyggjur, vínið var í topp standi!! Það er mjög opið í nefinu með kirsuberja, létt eikar og jarðvegs einkenni. Svo kemur sprenging í bragðinu, eik, ristað brauð, trufflur, ljóst súkkulaði, kaffi og kirsuber kemur allt í gegn! Eftirbragðið er mjög tannínríkt og situr vel og lengi í munni. EN ekki gleyma, þetta er Pinot Noir, ekki eitthvert skrímsli og þar af leiðandi silkimjúkt og fínlegt. Þetta er frábært vín og tilvalið með kalkún yfir hátíðarnar!! Yfirleitt fjalla ég ekki um vín sem fæst bara í sérpöntun en verðið 4.519 kr., miðað við gæði er of gott til að sleppa. Ég verð að viðurkenna, að ég hélt að ég væri búinn að finna gullmola sem enginn vissi af og ætlaði að fjalla um þetta vín mun fyrr. En tveimur dögum áður en ég ætlaði að skrifa grein, flæddi yfir netið umfjallanir um vínið!! Eftir smá umhugsun ákvað ég að kyngja stoltinu og lýsa hrifningu minni af víninu! Enda á vínið fyllilega heima í framúrskarandi vín umfjöllun.

Gríðarlega opið í nefinu með slatta af sólberja, dökku súkkulaði og eikar tón. Bragðið er mjög kröftugt og finnst mikið af brómberjum, sólberjum, sedrus, eik, dökku súkkulaði og papriku og það er svolítið stammt og tannínríkt. Eftirbragðið er langt og með tölverð áfengis einkenni. Frábært vín, en má umhella ef tími gefst. Verðið er enn og aftur hlægilegt miðað við gæði eða 3.999 kr.

Duckhorn Merlot, 2016, Napa Valley, Kalifornía, U.S.A.

Það er ekkert leyndarmál að mér finnst Napa Valley vín standa jafnfætis vínum frá Bordeaux í gæðum og oft mun betri gæði miðað við verð, og einnig lít ég á Duckhorn sem einn af þremur bestu Merlot framleiðendum í Bandaríkjunum. Enda eru vínin sífellt að skora hátt hjá öllum helstu vínsérfræðingum heims.

Lýsandi dæmi er 2016 árgangur, nefið er frekar lokað ennþá og þarf smá tíma til að opna sig, en þegar það er búið að anda kemur mikið af plómu, vanillu og sedrus í lykt. Bragðið er mjög kröftugt með mikil sólberja, plómu, negul og reykjar einkenni. Eftirbragðið er langt og tannínríkt og skilur eftir góðan ávaxta keim í lokinn. Hreint stórkostlegt vín. Ekki ódýrsta vínið á markaðinum, eða 6.867 kr. en þegar maður eyðir pening í góðan mat, á að eyða pening í gott vín líka.

I have been lucky enough to taste so many great wines that I very seldom have a „holy shit!“ moment anymore. What type of moment is that? That is when a wine comes around and is so much more than you expect, and you sit there and say „holy shit!!“ And that is what happened here! I was a little worried, even though this is a good producer, we are talking about a 5 year old Pinot Noir from Central Coast, not exactly the hot bed of Pinot Noir wines. Needless to say, I should not have worried, the wine was great.

A really open nose with cherries, slight oak and earth was followed by a great taste, consisting of oak, toast, truffles, milk chocolate, coffee and cherries. The aftertaste was long with great tannins. But remember, this is a Pinot Noir and even though the wine has a lot of taste doesn´t mean it´s a heavy metal monster. It is also quite intricate like a good Pinot Noir should be. It should be perfect with Turkey over the holidays. I have to admit, when I first tasted this wine, I thought I had found an undiscovered gem, and guess what, two days before I was going to write about it the wine internet in Iceland was flooded with all types of reviews! After some time of getting over my embarrasment and pettiness of not being the only one who knew how good this wine is, I decided to jump on the bandwagon, simply because it deserves to be in the outstanding wine group.

This is a wine that is very open in the nose, with forest fruits, blackberries and a oaky smell. The taste has a lot of blackberries, ceder wood, oak and dark chocolate with a touch of paprika. It is a dry wine with good tannins. The aftertaste is long with lots of alcohol in it. A great wine, but it needs decanting if you have time. The price is laughable considering the quality at only 3.999 kr.

Duckhorn Merlot, 2016, Napa Valley, Kalifornía, U.S.A.

It is no secret that I think Napa Valley wines are equal to wines of Bordeaux when we discuss quality, and many times are better quality to price ratio. It is also my opinion that Duckhorn is one of the three best makers of Merlot in the U.S., proof in point is how often they score highly in almost all of the top wine publications (case in point 2017 is in the top 100 of wine spectator 2020) , including European magazines.  

A good example is the 2016 vintage. The nose is still a little closed and needs time to breath, but when it opens up it has lots of plums, vanilla og ceder to it. The taste is powerful with lots of blackcurrant, plum, nutmeg og smoke in it. The aftertaste is really long with lots of tannin and leaves some good black fruit in the end. A truly terrific wine,  not the cheapest on the market at 6.867 kr., but when you spend lots of money on good food, you should spend money on good wine also.
